Visas are generally required by visitors to Ghana. ECOWAS citizens and citizens from certain countries are either exempt or granted entry on arrival either gratis or for a small fee at our ports of entry. Visas must be obtained before arrival into Ghana.

If you require an Invitation Letter to complete your visa application, you must let the Secretariat know as soon as possible. Just download the visa invitation assistance form providing the needed information including the following: The full name of visa applicant (as it appears in your Passport), Passport Number, Date of Issue, Expiry Date, Issuing Authority/Country, Nationality of Passport Holder

Driving into Ghana/Land Border Posts

In addition to flying into Ghana, there are also alternative ways of entering Ghana available through a number of entry stations along the borders with our neighbouring countries. The land travel may offer a nice opportunty of seeing a bit of the rural areas and countryside of Ghana in the process! In recent times, the more adventurous tourists have driven by car/truck/buses from Europe and other places through North Africa across the Sahara Desert to get to Ghana. The more popular border posts(with travel time estimates after clearing immigration and customs) are:

  • Aflao (near Lome, Republic of Togo) - approximately 3 hours by road to Accra

  • Elubo (Western Region, border with Cote d'Ivoire - approximately 7 hours by road to Accra

  • Paga and Bawku (Upper East Region, border with Burkina Faso - both towns are approximately 14 hours by road to Accra

Sailing into Ghana

Oh, and if you can find space on any of the cruise ships that periodically stop here or can find space in a nice cabin on any of the freight liner ships that call at the Ports of Tema and Takoradi, then sure, you can also be received into Ghana. Those who are truly adventurous can actually lease a boat for the journey into Ghana.

Electricity Voltage

Ghana's voltage is 230V and the system frequency is 50Hz.

For further information about plugs, visit http://www.kropla.com/!g.htm. Make sure you bring along a power adaptor if you use 100-110volts equipment as very few places have 110volts facilities. Also check before you use your 110volt equipment. It is recommended that you bring along 100-240volt adaptors for your laptops and mobile phones.

Currency

The currency is the Ghana Cedi (100 Ghana Pesewas (Gp) = 1 Ghana Cedi (GHC)). You can use your ATM, Debit and Credit Cards on most ATMs to obtain local currency. You can also freely exchange your cash in convertible currency into Ghana Cedis at any bank or bureau de change. The Banks and a few Bureaux de Change may accept your Travelers' Cheques. It is easier to exchange Pounds Sterling, US Dollars, Euros, South African Rand, CFA Francs to Cedis. Some of the major hotels, shops and restaurants will take your VISA or VISA Electron card but cash is most preferable everywhere for purchases and payments. Other cards such as American Express, Diners Club, MasterCard are used but check with your Card issuer for further information.

Your Mobile Phone

There are four mobile phone operators- three of them GSM platform - MTN, GhanaTelecom OneTouch and Tigo and one CDMA operator - Kasapa. You can either roam with your own number or you can buy a local SIM card from the operator of your choice if your phone is not network-locked.
